Hands On
The Healing Power of Our Hands: Temperature, Light, and the Science of Touch
Have you ever placed your hands on someone during prayer or healing and noticed your palms becoming warm, cool, or almost tingling? These experiences invite fascinating questions about the human body, light, and the age-old practice of laying on of hands.
Science has confirmed that human hands emit extremely faint light. Researchers call this phenomenon ultra-weak photon emission, or biophotons. A 2002 study measured these light emissions from human hands and found detectable photons beyond background levels. A 2005 study further demonstrated that photon emission from the hand varies with factors such as temperature and oxygen availability. These emissions are far too faint to be seen with the naked eye, but sensitive instruments can detect them. Research 1 | Research 2
Researchers have also explored whether laying on of hands might influence biological systems in ways beyond ordinary touch. In a 2007 experimental study, investigators reported increased biophoton emission from cucumber samples receiving a non-contact healing intervention compared with controls. This intriguing result warrants further investigation and does not establish that human hands transmit a healing light to another person. Read the study.
What about hands that grow warmer or cooler during a healing session? Skin temperature can change with blood flow, autonomic nervous system activity, the environment, and the relaxation response. Whether particular temperature changes during intentional healing have a distinct meaning remains an open research question.
For those of us who practice healing touch, prayer, or therapeutic bodywork, these findings offer a compelling bridge between personal experience and scientific curiosity. We know that the body emits measurable light, and we know that touch can influence how people feel. What we do not yet know is whether biophoton emission plays any meaningful role in healing between people.
Perhaps the next step is careful observation: measuring hand temperature before and after sessions, documenting sensations, and inviting further research into the relationship between intention, touch, physiology, and light.
The mystery is not a reason to abandon scientific inquiry. It is an invitation to explore with open hearts, curious minds, and respect for what the evidence can—and cannot—tell us.

In 2001, I lost my special needs medically fragile daughter after 6 years of trying to keep her alive.  I lost my health to the stress, grief, mold in my home,  and self-medicating with sugar and caffeine.  Years of nutritional supplements and radical diet changes only made a minimal difference.  In 2007, Karen Hopkins, a woman who didn't even know me, gifted me with  One Raindrop Technique service and  taught myself and some friends the Ancient Oils of Scripture class.   I woke up the following morning happy for the first time in 10 years, as I realized I had lost happy when the doctors took my little newborn daughter and didn't let me see her touch her or know anything about her condition for 2 full days.   I've used Young Living Essential Oils daily ever since and people who were around me would ask me what I was doing different and then ask if I knew of an oil that might help them.  I love helping people find wellness, purpose, and abundance.   I will never be the same again.
